The Changing Look Of Walking Shoes Because Of New Soles
You might do a double take with the newest rage in walking shoes ñ soles in the shoes that make your foot seem to roll through a higher mid-point at the arch.
These shoes, originally called earth shoes because they emulate the action of walking barefoot in sand, are now being touted as a great way to shape up your legs and derriere, improve circulation and core muscles, and generally get more from walking.
Earth shoes weren’t too popular when it first came out decades ago because they looked like they were designed for someone with special needs. Invented in the 1970’s ,MBT’s also weren’t considered in style until recently. Now they’re one of the top-of-the-line shoes.
Now MBTs, which cost upwards of $150, have been featured in many magazines and praised for not only their ability to help tone legs and buttocks, but also added comfort for people with knee or lower back problems.
Catching on to the trend are other shoe brands. Both Reebok and Skechers are debuting lines which make the same claims by once again going back to soles that recreate walking in sand. Skechers, similar to the MBT’s, does it with a reverse incline and rounded sole, Reebok on the other hand looks more like the traditional shoe with balance pods that allow air to travel underneath the sole of the foot and gives off the same effect.
Aside from the three manufacturers, along with other lesser known brands who make athletic shoes, there are other choices as well. Fit Flops makes a walking boot version and a version of flip- flops that uses the same technology. While other makers produce lines of unisex shoes, knowing the benefits beyond better looking legs, Reebok’s lines lean towards women and MBT makes hiking boots and sandals as well.
If you decide to take advantage of any of these lines, expect to pay more than you might for your everyday shoe, although knockoff lines are also available at a reduced price.
Before spending a lot of money, be sure to try them on and walk around as much as possible, or find a store that will take a return if you decide you cannot walk in them. Although balance may be an issue in some lines like MBT, especially if you are just getting started on them, the rolling action in most of the shoes are very comfortable.
Try to start out with shorter walks than you may be accustomed to taking. Even if you are fit, this type of shoe will work your muscles in a different way and you may initially be less comfortable with them. Rest assured that over time you can achieve benefits with this type of sole, whether you see it in the mirror or feel it in your knees, back and core.
